Tillie: Talented Terrier and Superstar Artist
By Julia Szabo

Four years ago, this reporter got the scoop on a talented terrier named Tillamook Cheddar, a.k.a. Tillie, who makes arf - er, art - by scratching, biting, and gnawing at paper. Today, Tillie is an art-world superstar whose work fetches upwards of $600 and draws comparison to Cy Twombly. She’s got a hard-working studio assistant (her devoted human, Bowman Hastie), a web site (www.tillamookcheddar.com), and access to prestigious exhibition venues most two-legged artists would kill for, including the New-York Historical Society.

With an A-list of fans, including actor Elijah Wood, Diane Sawyer of Good Morning America, and Andy Rooney of 60 Minutes, Tillie’s about to star in a movie based on her life; the producer is none other than Ben Barenholtz, of Coen Brothers fame.

But Benji she ain’t; Tillie’s story is “not a family film,” Hastie is quick to point out.

Tillie even has her own exhibition space, Tillie Ltd., in the arty Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. And because she’s model-beautiful, Tillie’s been moonlighting as a muse.

A recent exhibition, titled “Pictures of Tillie,” featured portraits by Tillie’s tail-less colleagues, including photographer Dirk Westphal, painter Martha Szabo, sculptor Mike Bilyk, and conceptual artist Jason Polan, whose surreal “portrait” installation consists of a mirror and a dog bowl with water.

The gallery also features an impressive selection of Tillie-themed merchandise, from tote bags to T-shirts. And because creative types can’t live on inspiration alone, Tillie has lent her name and image to a new brand of dog food with the tag line “Eat or Die.”

Tillie Ltd., 212 Berry St., bet. No. Third and Metropolitan, Brooklyn, NY, 718-599-0844; gallery hours: Friday 6-10 pm; Saturday and Sunday, noon-6 pm.
