Mooki’s Fund

To All Friends of Mooki and All Companion Animals;

Our dog Mooki, who was the center of our universe for the nearly eight years since he first came to us, died suddenly and unexpectedly in June 2000 from a genetic disorder we could not have detected or prevented.  We miss him tremendously.  It helps to know that his spirit and his love, along with the memories of the wonderful life we shared with him, will be with us forever.  We now also have the knowledge that, in his memory, other beloved animal companions will benefit.

We are very pleased to inform you about Mooki’s Fund, a charitable fund whose purpose is to provide financial assistance in memory of Mooki for animals in San Diego County whose human families cannot afford the cost of emergency or life-saving medical care or treatment for the animal, and also for “good Samaritans” in need, whose rescued animals need costly emergency care.

Mooki’s Fund has been established through United Animal Nations ("UAN"), a Sacramento-based, national animal welfare organization.  We are very familiar with UAN and its operations and goals. UAN already has a program designated as "LifeLine," which has essentially the same purpose as Mooki’s Fund, except on a national, rather than local, level.  Mooki’s Fund has been established as an offshoot of UAN's LifeLine program, as a separate and distinct fund.  Inasmuch as UAN is an existing 501c3 charitable organization, all contributions to Mooki’s Fund are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

We work together with UAN to review applications for assistance under Mooki’s Fund and determine eligibility, with final approval by UAN to assure consistency with overall goals and guidelines. In particular, the animal must be spayed or neutered.  Following UAN's experience with this type of fund, we are working primarily with a select number of local veterinarians and animal hospitals (selected based on our personal knowledge and/or recommendations by those with personal knowledge) and rely on their knowledge of their clientele as well as information obtained through the application process to determine who will receive assistance from Mooki’s Fund.  The maximum currently obtainable from Mooki’s Fund for any given applicant is $200 or 60% of the total bill (whichever is less) for the treatment or procedure.  Each year we will re-evaluate these limitations and consider whether any modification would be appropriate.  The goal is to benefit as many animals as possible and to provide assistance only to those truly in need.

We hope that all of you who care about all companion animals will give generously to Mooki’s Fund.  You should know that Mooki’s Fund will be available to help all companion animals, including cats, although Mooki himself may have questioned that decision.  Checks should be made payable to "UAN/Mooki’s Fund."  Your tax-deductible contributions can be sent directly to UAN at:

If you work for a company which matches charitable contributions, please be sure to advise the company of your donation to Mooki’s Fund (UAN's tax identification number is 68-0124097) or send the company's matching form to UAN with your donation and UAN will handle it from there.

Thank you in advance for helping us help other animals in memory of Mooki.  We encourage you to spread the word about Mooki’s Fund to others who may wish to contribute.  If you have any questions or would like any additional information, you may contact United Animal Nations by e-mail at info@uan.org  or by phone at 916-429-2457.

                                   Sincerely,

Mooki’s Family,

and Mooki in spirit
