The Dilemma of the Carriage Horses

The simple beauty of a
carriage horse is timeless. The sense of romance and simplicity draws many
to favor the occasional ride. But underneath the nostalgic exterior lurks
a horrible and brutal life, one fraught with inhumane conditions that the
horses are forced to endure their entire lives. One might think that the
beloved horses of New York City are given proper care, as they have been a
substantial symbol of the city since the beginning of its forging.
The
beautiful beasts of burden of New York look forward to nine-hour workdays,
seven days a week without a designated rest period. They may face
temperatures ranging from 92 degrees to below 18 degrees Fahrenheit. At
the end of their grueling day they are marched back to one of several
multi-story stables built more than 100 years ago. Built almost
exclusively out of wood and filled with hay, the stables can be turned
into a death trap with a simple spark. The stalls, merely 4 feet wide, do
not allow the animals to lie down or roll as any natural animal would
under normal conditions. The stables are not equipped with a turnout area
to allow the horse to buck, kick, roll or run, as this is what the animal
requires to remain healthy. The lack of veterinary attention is
surprising. One would think that these companies, considering that the
true income comes from these horses, would stress better health. Rather,
the average horse only receives attention when a problem is evident.
These magnificent creatures deserve the best of care, as they provide joy
and transportation to millions a year. Please write to New York City
decision-makers as new legislative changes are being made throughout the
state. The fate of these creatures could be in your hands.
